Ocular injuries

All of us are dealing with a large number of eye injuries. Over the past four years in this industrial area we have tackled a total of 5556 cases of injuries of which 134 cases of serious nature have been followed up. It was observed that children and young adults predominate. Most injuries had taken place outside the factory.
We suggest the following procedure be adopted in dealing with injuries
- Detailed history and examination at the earliest opportunity.
- Immediate operative intervention if indicated.
- Prevention of infection.
- Proper evaluation of hyphaemas when to operate.
- Minimum follow up upto 2 years.
- Medico leagal aspects to be borne in mind.
Recording of visual acquity at first visit and proper maintainance of records for future compensation claims etc. - Prevention.
