The government of India as well as state governments have laid down restrictions as follows
1. Permission of District Medical Officer prior to the camp.
2. The District Medical Officer will depute the Govt ophthalmologist to visit the camp to see the conditions.
3. There must be a qualified eye doctor for the postoperative care.
As a result of these strict orders, the total number of operations performed in 1986/87 has come down Perhaps there might have been a boost in these figures in earlier years due to false presentation. If they have performed 100 cases I understand that they have reported 200 cases and claimed the money.
The Supreme Court has given instructions to the Medical Council of India and the Government asking them what further steps should be taken for the quality control of the operations. It will not be a good to stop the camps now, but all efforts must be made to improve the quality of the camps. I think Dr. Mohan would have explained to you about the regulations., Some of the officers in U.P. where suspended from these camps.
