With reference to the editorial published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology Vol. 3 5, No. 3.1987, I have to state that the remarks made by the Editor is totally disagreeable for the following reasons.

Free eye camp schemes are being conducted in Tamil Nadu from 1961. From 1972 onwards till 1988 386 government free eye camps were organized and performed 104,398 cataract operations The results of each eye camp were good and the vision in the cases were as good as operated in the hospital and complications were very minimal

The Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India appreciate the services in the camps and also there is a very good response from the public whenever an eye camp is organized. The expenditure incurred for each cataract case is very economical compared to hospitalisation, because eye camps organised in rural areas is very much helpful to the poor patients who cannot afford the expenses to come to cities to undergo the surgery. There is a little complication inspite of camps being conducted in villages. It is not known why it should not be conducted in rural areas. We are conducting these programmes during all these days with good result.
