This book written by a consultant surgeon, Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital, is a quick reference book for the junior medical officers in the ophthalmic emergency unit. The book is written in bold letters in simple English with lot of space for easy reading. It is divided into seven chapters with several good diagrammatic illustrations suitable for better understanding of the subject by ophthalmic house officers, ophthalmic assistants and ophthalmic surgeons.

Besides trauma of all types, the book deals with acute glaucoma, central retinal vessel occlusion, retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage in a brief way: The author describes also the important diagnostic and management principles. The last chapter is on prevention as well as on referral information.

This book can guide the junior medical officers in taking decision regarding referral of a case to consultants.

The book would have been more useful if the dose of the drugs to be administered is mentioned specially with drugs not in common use by practicing doctors. Few colour prints of acute conditions like central retinal artery occlusion, iridocyclitis, congestive narrow angle glaucoma and dacryocystitis could have added to the beauty as well as utility of the book.

Still it could be an asset in any ophthalmic emergency room.
