An inexpensive cryoprobe has been made at General Hospital Udaipur(Rajasthan). The instrument consists of a plastic test tube which is perforated at lower end through which a copper wire is passed. The copper wire has 2mm diameter at distal end and is uniformly 2mm thick for 3 cms, then its diameter gradually increases from 2mm to 4mm. The thinner end is passed in the lower opening of the plastic test tube in a way that thicker end remains inside the test tube. The cryoprobe costs only Rs. 150/- and can be manufactured by surgeon himself.

When 2cc. of Freon (Mefron-12) is passed in the test tube, the probe is ready for the lens extraction. As the thickness of the wire increases gradually inside the test tube, it gives a tight closer at the opening, and hence the liquid itself cannot come out of the tube.

The probe can be sterilized either by autoclaving or by boiling. With 1 Kg. of gas, which costs about Rs. 25/-, 50 to 60 cataract extractions can be done easily.
