Malik S. International Eye Foundation. Indian J Ophthalmol 1976;24:41
International Eye Foundation was started in 1961 as a non-profit, non-sectarian organisation for the prevention and cure of world wide blindness. The programmes of the foundation include disbursement of tissue for corneal transplants, provision of aid and equipment for establishing Eye Banks in developing countries, providing fellowships, training of para-medical personnel, arrange visits by professors and surgeons who volunteer their services, conduct seminars in the latest surgical advances and treatment and operate in the developing nations of the world.
The funds for the Foundation come as grants from industry, foundations, contributions from organisations and the general public, society of eye surgeons and the U.S. Government.
I had visited U.S.A. in May, 1975 and had the opportunity to visit various ophthalmic centres doing excellent. The visit was supported by International Eye Foundation. I was deeply impressed with the devotion of the band of workers headed by Dr. King who were handling such an important programme on voluntary basis. The raising of funds is the main problem which they have solved by their devotion to the cause. The team of workers headed by Dr. King are highly motivated and hard working. They have impressed me tremendously by their human approach and deep understanding of the problems of the developing countries. I congratulate Dr. King for the excellent work being done by his organisation.
