Cryo surgery for trichiasis is a new approah to its management and this paper deals with this method of treatment and result and result obtainod.
Materials and method
20 cases of trichiasis were subjected to cryo surgery as primary procedures under local anaesthesia. The lid was slightly everted and the retinal probe of the cryo machine was placed at the conjunctival side of the inturning eyelash pointing towards the eyelash opening and was frozen for 30 seconds. The process was repeated twice. The lid became oedamatous with slight irritation at the treated site and remained such for 2 to 7 days.
The cryo machine used was made by Asia Contact Lens Cahoratory. Madras which uses Nitrous Oxide as the collant gas and the tip temperature drops to -60°C to -80° C (as per manufactures specification).
Observatioas
20 cases of trichiasis were treated. After initial treatment 13 were cured and 7 had the recurrence. All the 7 cases were suggested retreatment but only 4 case for it. Out of these 2 were cured and 2 had the recurrence. Depigmation of the skin or deformity of the lid margin was not seen in any of these cases. No other emplication was seen.
Discussion
Though this series is a small one for proper evaluation of the results, cryo surgery for trichiasis appears to be a safe and uncomplicated procedure which can be repeated if necessary and provides alternative to other means of treatment.
