DR VICTOR C RAMBO
Dr. Victor Clough Rambo, 92, Internationally known Medical Missionary and Ophthalmologist died on 23rd May, 1987 in California.
Dr. Rambo was born in the foothills of the Himalayas and was educated in the U.S.A After taking his basic medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he spent 60 years of his life in different parts of India. Initially he was the Medical Director of the Mungeli Christian Hospital in a remote part of Central India He organised and equipped Mobile Eye Hospitals in rural areas and identified cataracts as the major cause of blindness in India.
From 1947 to 1958 Dr. Rambo served as the Head of the Eye Department of the Christian Medical College, Vellore. In 1959 he became the Chief of the Department of Ludhiana Medical College. He was awarded Kaisar1 Hind medal by King George VI and in 1972 he received Ehrenzeller award from the ex-resident association of Pennsylvania Hospital. He was also made a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
He was the founder of an organization called 'Rambo Committee' Inc.', with the motto "Sight for the Curable Blind". Dr. Rambo worked for 60 years in India to restore sight to the poor of India, and trained young surgeons to carry on eye work Even after his retirement he continued to raise funds to help continue the good work
Dr. Rambo is survived by his wife Louise, two daughters and 3 sons, 15 grand children and 2 great grand children.
