Dr. Ramon Castroviejo needs no introduction to any ophthalmologist He was born in Spain in 1905 and passed away on January 1, 1987 at the age of 82. He graduated in 1927 from the Medical School of the University of Madrid and joined as assistant at the Red Cross Hospital Later he worked as an Ophthalmologist at the Chicago Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital for 2 years and was then a Research Fellow at the Mayo Clinic. In 1931 he joined the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre in New York and was there till 1952.

He was Chief of ophthalmology at St Vincents Hospital and attending surgeries at Bellevue Hospital He was the Clinical Professor at New York University Post Graduate Medical School and Mount Sinai Medical School, New York.

He was an extra ordinary surgeon and his main contri­butions were in the field of Keratoplasty, Cataract and Glaucoma procedures. He was deviced many instru­ments needless and sutures which are still used. He has published more than 250 articles and an "Atlas on Keratectomy and Keratoplasty'. He was the receipient of many honours and decorations both in his country and abroad.

He is survived by a son and a daughter. I had the prevelage to spend 2 weeks in his clinic at New York in 1973. He had an international clientele of patients Several ophthalmic surgeons from many nations used to be there to observe his surgical skill

Ophthalmology allover the world will remain indebted to Dr. Castroviejo for the contributions he made in ophthalmic surgery and service.
