I fully endorse your views expressed in the editorial (Vol 3 5, 3, 1987) that strict legal control is mandatory on eye camps and no such camp should be allowed to work where basic facilities of surgery and post operative care of the patient are lacking. Uneventful surgery and good vision is the birthright of every cataract patient and nobody should loose his eye only for being operated in an eye camp. We should go for quality not quantity. Unqualified surgeons should be debarred from holding such camps. Our state; Haryana, probably leads in community ophthalmology and we hold a camp for ten days; first three of which is surgical phase and rest is devoted to concentrated post-operative care of the patients. Your routine of transporting the patient to hospitals is of course ideal Single day eye camps, which are in vogue now a days, where the surgical team arrives in the morning selecting the patients without any preoperative assessment operate hundreds of them and sleep back home leaving everything to Him are suicidal Let us prevent these camps from being considered the third common cause of blindness, after cataract and trachoma.
