From the book to the bedside: The role of review articles in evidence-based medicine

All of us, Ophthalmologists seek to offer the best standard of care to our patients. As clinicians, it is, therefore, imperative that we keep abreast of the constantly evolving changes in our specialty. Researching, critically analyzing and applying the current best evidence into the care of patients is what evidence-based medicine is about. [1] Therefore to make the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology that much more relevant, not just to specialist Ophthalmologists in academic institutes, but also to practicing general Ophthalmologists in India, we envisage to publish at least two comprehensive review articles in every issue.
The aim of these review articles would be to exhaustively scrutinize the available medical literature, identify the clinically relevant information and generate the material required to devise the best clinical approach to any disorder; but most importantly, to present it in a form that the average clinician can imbibe and put into his or her practice. Our editorial team will be inviting leading Ophthalmologists to contribute their review articles, which, as always, will be published only after the rigorous scrutiny of peer-review. This plan is not restricted only to clinical reviews, but to include meta-analyses as well.
In this issue, we have a thought-provoking editorial by Milind Naik, who highlights the relevance of ophthalmic plastic surgery and how he feels that they are best suited to handle many conditions that, otherwise, get referred to other specialists. Furthermore, Kelkar et al., have highlighted the current concepts in the surgical strategies to treat intermittent exotropia. In keeping with the theme of presenting state-of-the-art review articles, Pandya et al., have presented a comprehensive review on hydroxychloroquine retinopathy. In this issue, we conclude our symposium on "retinal and choroidal imaging" with two review articles on unconventional techniques of fundus imaging and wide-field retinal imaging.
