An oculus hand lamp 3807 (manu�factured by "Oculus" Dutenhofen KR. Wetzlar, W. Germany) is a versatile simple instrument for eye examination. It can be used for extraocular examination as well as for funduscopy, with the aid of a plano�convex hand lens, as an uniocular indirect ophthalmoscope. It is simple to carry, as it can be easily slipped into a coat pocket.

For economic reasons and for the simplicity mentioned above, this is widely used by us here in our eye department and in the mobile eye hospitals in rural areas. It is probably so with many other eye departments in developing countries.

We know from the use of the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, how helpful and important is the teaching mirror attached to it, by which the student and the teacher can both see an area of the fundus at the same time. We have found that a similar benefit can be obtained when using an Oculus hand lamp for uniocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. Here a simple device is presented, - an ordinary plane mirror (size 50 mm X 35 mm) mounted with a rim on the neck of the Oculus hand lamp at an angle of 145 degrees with the projected beam of light. When examining the fundus, the examiner's eye has to be very close to the mirror so that the axis remains the same to reflect in the mirror the same area of the fundus for the student. A see-through mirror will be ideal for this purpose. This mirror can be slid in and out easily according to the need.

 Summary



A teaching mirror for the uniocular indirect ophthalmoscope (Oculus hand lamp 3807) is presented, with photo�graph and diagram.
