This is an attempt to detect the various ophthalmic abnormalities in Paediatric Rickets. During the period 1973-1977 eighty five rickets cases were collected between 1 to 12 years age group.

 Observations

Out of 85 cases, 60 (70%) were vitamin D responsing, and 25 (30%) were refractory rickets, of these 12 cases (14%) were hypophosphatemic type, 2 (2.5%) cases hypocalcemic type, 2 cases Fanconi's syndrome and 1 case Lowe's syndrome. Eight cases were clinically rickets without any deficiency levels in the blood.

In 20% cases refraction under atropinisation revealed: hypermetropia-12%, emmetropia6% and myopia 2/. 60% rickets children (51 cases) showed associated deficiency signs like xerosis-20%; Bitot spots-15%; night blindness -20%; keratomalacia-2%; corneal opacities 6% and congenital cataract 2%.

Out of 40% refractory rickets (34 cases), 3% corneal dystrophy, 6% congenital cataract, corneal cystenosis in the form of Juve.iile acrus senilis 1 case, congenital glaucoma with pseudoproptosis I case, optic atrophy 2 cases, retinal degeneration with night blindness 8 cases. One case showed a typical scleral rickets with signs of blue sclera and proptosis.

Out of 12 hypophosphatemic rickets, 8 cases (75%) showed eye lesions like cataract, glaucoma, and corneal dys copies. Hypocalcimic cases showed mental retardation with optic atrophy in 50%.

 Summary

85 cases of rickets having ocular lesion were studied in detail.
