A total of 200 patients of either sex with various ophthalmic inflammatory disorders of surgical and non-surgical types were treated with ibuprofen with paracetamol 1 tablet tid. or a combination of oxyphenbutazone and analgin-1 tablet t. i. d. for 7 days/ Patients in the ibuprofen with Paracetamol group recorded a signifi­cantly greater reduction in pain scores; on day 1 and 2 and in swelling scores on day 2, 5 and 7 as compared to patients receiving the combination of ox yphenbutazone and analgin. A significantly lesserr number of patients in the ibuprofen with paraeetamol group required escape analgesics. Seventy six per cent of patients in the Ibuprofen with paracetamol group were judged as showing a Very good - Good, response to treatment as against 55 per cent in the oxvphenbutazone­analgin group. It is concluded that ibuprofen with Paracetamol is superior in efficacy and a safer alternative to a combination of oxyphenbutazone and analgin.

21 patients with 25 chalazia were treated with intra-lesional triamcinolone acetonide injection. 56% lesions resolved after a single injection while 32% after a second injection. 12% lesions required incision and curettage. No case was associated with any complication. The procedure is quick, cheap, safe, convenient and an effective alternative to conventional surgery.

The intra cameral use of 0.025% carbachol as a miotic agent in anterior chamber intraocular lens im­plant surgery us reported in 15 cases. Carbachol produced prompt and effective moisis and was found to be harmless and non-irritating to the anterior chamber structures. A rebound dialatation of the pipit was noticed in the post operative period in 3 of our first 5 cases where only carbachol was used. Alpha-1 antitrypsin and serum albumin levels were measured in the tear fluids in 81 healthy subjects and 142 patients with conjunctival diseases. The levels of the two proteins were independent of age and sex. They were found to be increased in all the conjunctival diseases studied excepting epithelial xerosis. The extent of the increase correlated well with the severity of the diseases. The alpha-1 antitrypsin and serum albumin levels in tears showed return to normal levels with clinical improvement. The present study indicates that the markedly raised level of alpha-1 antitrypsin in tears in inflamed eyes is mainly due to the passive leakage of the protein from the congested conjunctival blood vessels in to tear fluids and not due to local release or production.

Repair of colobomas caused after excision of kissing naevi presents a special problem because of their symmetrical placement. Successful repair in two cases with the surgical-technique is presented. Canthotomy and cantholysis along with direct suturing and Tenzel's semicircular rotation flap gave excellent results.

Von Hippel Lindan disease is a rare congenital vascular malformation afflicting the retinal and central nervous system blood vessels. A boy aged 12 years suffering from this angiomatosis with bilateral involvement was examined. Fundus both eyes revealed marked vascular malformation in the form of extreme venous dilatation and tortuosity along with angioma formation. There was no associated central nervous system involvement in this case.

The ocular ferning test was used to qualitatively assess mucus function in early stages of xerophthalmia. The results indicate that inspite of histological evidence of loss of goblet cells in the early stages, mucous function and production is sufficient to produce ferning. It is suggested that such derangements in mucous ferning may occur in more advanced stages of xerophthalmia.

Traumatic cataracts can nor be adequately managed with cutting aspiration systems by an anterior or pars planes approach 20 cases were randomly assured to these two approaches Pars plana lensectomy caused a more frequent uveitis and secondary glaucoma, though the visual acuity achieved post-operatively was similar in the two groups. We recommend an anterior lensectomy for patients who do not require simultaneous posterior segment surgery, because the retained posterior capsule decreases the indicence of complications.

This analysis identifies the various patterns of the responses of the medicines in controlling allergic conjunctivitis. The mean S Deviation coefficient of variation, correlation matrix and loading of factors are worked out as stated in the tables. In the present case the Eigen values greater than 1.50 are retained. The four factors retained explain 68% of the total variations of the 16 responses. The first factor shows 23.38% of variations in total responses while first two and first three factors show 42.39% and 58.64% respectively. Water, electrolyte and free amino acid content of the crystalline lens were estimated in patients with nuclear cataract and in immature, mature and hypermature cortical cataract groups. Wet weight/dry weight and sodium/potassium ratios were calculated. Sodium, potassium ratio was significantly higher in immature cortical cataract when compared with the nuclear cataract. With maturation of the cortical cataract, the lens was found to be more hydrated and there was accumulation of sodium. However, free amino acid content of the lens decreased. A hypothesis has been proposed for alterations in the active transport pump of the crystalline lens during the maturation of the cortical cataract.
